15. Neuseeland, Mt. Egmont (Taranaki) Radardaten zeigen Landnutzung durch Landwirtschaft und Tourismus Eindrucksvoll präsentiert sich der beinahe runde Vulkankegel des Mount Egmont auf der Nordinsel Neuseelands. Die Form dieses Vulkans besteht in dieser Ausprägung vermutlich erst seit rund 10.000 Jahren, auch seine Höhe von 2518 Metern hat er erst damals erreicht. Lavaströme von älteren Ausbrüchen bedecken einen Großteil der Umgebung, sie erstrecken sich über etwa 25 Kilometer in Richtung Ozean und formen eine ringförmige, gut sichtbare Ebene. Der Name, den die Maori diesem Berg gegeben haben, lautet Taranaki , was soviel bedeutet wie ohne Vegetation . Noch vor wenigen tausend Jahren waren die tiefer gelegenen Ebenen vollständig von dichten Wäldern bedeckt. Heute gibt es nur noch an den Hängen des Taranaki die Urwälder des Egmont-Nationalparks mit ihrer reichhaltigen Flora und Fauna. Die Umgebung wird von intensiv genutztem Weideland dominiert. Auf dem Gipfel befinden sich einige Schneefelder, allerdings keine Gletscher. Im Sommer ist die Spitze häufig vollständig eisfrei, während im Winter auf dem kleinen Manganui-Skifeld Wintersport betrieben werden kann. © DLR Aufnahmedatum: 15.
